Diabetic retinopathy remains the leading cause of blindness worldwide. Patients are often asymptomatic at the start of the disease, this is the time when medical treatment is most effective- making screening even more important.
A dilated eye exam is the standard of care and should be performed by an experienced ophthalmologist
*For Type I Diabetes: recommend screening within 5 years of diagnosis
*For Type II Diabetes: recommend screening at the time of diagnosis
Follow up: patients should have yearly eye exams, visits may need to be more frequent depending on the extent of the disease
