Athletes and Heart Health

It is recommended that students should be evaluated for heart disease before competing in high school or college sports, and followed every 2 years while competing.

  • Especially is there is a family history of early heart disease
  • If the student has chest pain or shortness of breath with activity or they are found to have high blood pressure or a heart murmur on exam, it is recommended to have an EKG and echocardiogram
