Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Signs and symptoms: daytime sleepiness, loud snoring, gasping and choking in sleep, and morning headaches. 

Evaluation: STOP BANG questionnaire

S: Do you Snore loudly enough to wake others?

T: Do you feel Tired, fatigued or sleepy during the day?

O: Has anyone Observed you stop breathing during sleep?

P: Are you being treated for high blood Pressure?

B: BMI greater than 35?

A: Age greater than 50?

N: Neck size greater than 16 inches?

G: Gender male

Diagnosis requires a sleep study, either full or split night study. Talk to your provider if an at home sleep study could be right for you. 

Treatment: behavior modification like weight loss and sleeping in a non-supine position, CPAP (positive pressure therapy), oral appliance to move the mandible forward, or surgery if other therapies are ineffective for at least 3 months.
